Partial Discharge (PD) is the breakdown of an insulation system found in all High Voltage Electrical equipment.

Partial Discharge can be fatal to an electrical item of plant. As it is not always visible, like most mechanical issues, it can be destructing your plant from the inside out without you ever knowing about it, as the equipment will still run and operate (sometimes without showing any signs of concern) until the day that it has a disastrous consequence.
